The Technical Specialist is responsible for providing specialized technical expertise in the maintenance, diagnosis, repair, commissioning, and reliability improvement of equipment used in container handling operations. The role supports operational efficiency, equipment availability, skills development and compliance with safety, health, and legislative requirements.
Key Performance Areas/Responsibilities

Technical Support &amp; Troubleshooting
Provide advanced technical assistance for material handling equipment including Konecranes, Terberg, and Link belt.
Diagnose and resolve complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and control system faults
Support field technicians with escalated technical issues and root cause analysis
Recommend corrective actions and permanent solutions to recurring failures
Act as the technical escalation point for complex and recurring equipment failures

Preventive Maintenance and Reliability
Develop, implement, and review preventive maintenance programmes in line with OEM guidelines
Monitor equipment condition, analyse failure trends, and recommend improvements
Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to reduce downtime and lifecycle cost

Installation, Commissioning, and Modification
Support or lead commissioning new equipment and attachments
Perform calibration, parameter setting, and functional testing in accordance with OEM specifications
Assist with equipment upgrades, retrofits, and modifications
Ensure equipment is configured correctly for site operating conditions


Health, Safety, and Legislative Compliance
Ensure compliance with:
Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993)
Relevant regulations, site rules, and company procedures
OEM safety standards
Identify hazards and participate in risk assessments and incident investigations
Promote safe work practices and correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
Training and Skills Development
Provide technical training and on-the-job coaching to technicians and equipment operators
Assist in skills development and competency assessments
Prepare technical documentation, safe work instructions, and service reports


Customer and Stakeholder Support
Provide technical advisory support to customers and operational teams
Assist with technical reports, equipment condition assessments, and recommendations
Liaise with OEMs and suppliers regarding technical issues and product improvements
 
Warranty Responsibilities
Warranty Claim Management: Review, validate, and process warranty claims in strict alignment with company policies and manufacturer guidelines.
Compliance Verification: Ensure all warranty documentation, parts, and labor submissions meet regulatory and contractual requirements.
Stakeholder Coordination: Liaise with customers, service teams, and suppliers to resolve warranty disputes promptly and ensure fair, transparent outcomes.

Proven experience on Konecranes reach stackers and Terberg Tractors is essential
Exposure to port, terminal, container depot, or heavy logistics environments

Summary Statement:

Registered as: Lifting Machinery inspector in terms of the Engineering Profession Act,2000 Act no 46of 2000.
Qualified Diesel and/or Petrol Mechanic, plus experience with forklifts or similar material handling equipment; or Qualified Forklift Mechanic; or Qualified Auto Electrician with mechanical experience and abilities.
Qualified forklift technician, plus experience of minimum of 5 years with forklift or similar material handling equipment; or qualified Forklift Mechanic
General working knowledge of auto electrical system (ignition, starting, charging, illumination)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

Tasks:
Optimize workshop operations:
Follow the guidelines set up by CFAO and the manufacturers.

Evaluate client needs by asking them the appropriate questions.
Explain the nature of the work to clients, the quality control methods and commit to the deadline and cost.
Provide advice based on the vehicle's overall condition.
Prepare quotation based on the client or insurance company request and conduct follow ups regarding repair approval.
Conduct vehicle inspections and take pictures if required.
Ensure that the repair orders are signed on the day of the repair and ensure the client receives a copy.
Ensuring that all commitments are met:
Maintain contact with the clients regarding their quotations prepared, approved and update them on the status of the parts ordered as well as the date of reparation.
Maintain contact with the workshop to be able to conduct follow-ups and receive updates on the progress of pending matters.
Provide updates to clients or insurance companies by phone or email of any unforeseen delay or cost overruns and obtain their approval according to the established procedure.
Ensure that the work performed meets the required standards to guarantee client satisfaction in terms of quality, time, and price.
Generate invoices for Repair Orders (ROs) based on finished work, making sure they completely match the estimates that the client or insurance company has approved.
Ensure that all approved work is completed prior vehicle delivery.

Guiding customers during vehicle returns:
Escort the clients till the register.
Review with the client on the work performed and highlight the checks and test conducted.
Ensure that the payment of the invoice (including any insurance excess) has been collected prior vehicle delivery.
Accompany clients to their vehicle and remove protective covers.

Invoicing of the Work or Repair Orders:
Ensure that the repair/work orders of the delivered vehicles are submitted for invoicing.
Be able to invoice the work or repair orders while verifying approved quotes and report any discrepancies to the supervisor.
Send invoices to customers or insurers.
Comply with the criteria of the CFAO Internal Control (PACI).

Keep the vehicle parking area in good a good and clean condition.
